Education and Training

a process of learning, re-learning, and unlearning

I began violin lessons at age 7, after begging for a year when I found out another girl in my class was playing. My parents rented a 1/4 size violin, and put me in lessons. I always wanted to be a violinist, but I did not always want to practice. I knew that I wanted to be in orchestra though, and I really wanted to play solos wearing fancy dresses, so I kept at it and was allowed to join my grade-school orchestra a year early. It felt like a pretty big deal when I got to perform My Heart Will Go On as a solo in the school concert. (For those under 20, this was the mid-90s equivalent to whatever Cardi B song is viral on TikTok now. It was cool.)
